Well, the argument for it is millions of jobs will go under. You will lose the largest manufacturing unit in the United States, the heart and soul of American manufacturing. R&D goes with it. Technology goes with it. Engineering goes with it.

And more important, the auto industry has an enormous future in this world. Americans, we buy, in a good year, 17 million cars. China, India, all these countries are opening up. People are moving into the middle class. They're going to want cars. You will carve the United States out of much of the future. But in terms of viability, what's killed General Motors, and the others, is they have dropped the greatest, highest-paid guys who give the most in taxes, the cleanest, safest factories, and dropped them into global competition against factories in places like China, whose managers would be in a penitentiary if they were doing in the United States what they're allowed to do over there.

We are Americans. Why would you buy a car from a foreign country that hires Americans at a third of what American auto makers pay and all the profits go overseas? That, in and of itself, is un-American.

The Big 3 were instrumental in our winning of WW2. Were it not for GM and Ford converting to make military trucks, jeeps, and other components of the American war machine, we may be all speaking German or Japanese right now. And quite frankly, if we keep "whoring" ourselves out with the trade deficit the way we have been; we may end up speaking Japanese or Mandarin yet.

The time has come to stand up and say no more to our manufacturing jobs being shipped overseas. No more to foreign countries driving down the American standard of living. No more to foreign companies having influence over our elected officials. No damn more! Did Congress ask the AIG executives how they got to Washington? Did they ask Lehman Bros., Bank of America, or anybody else?

Stop selling out your fellow Americans. Look for the Union Label. Look for the Made in America labels. When you walk into a store, ask where the American made products are. Stay the hell out of Wal-Mart. We are Americans and it's high time we remember that. Buy American. At least 3 million of your fellow citizens, and quite possibly the economic future of this country, are depending on you.

STOP THE WAR

Stop the War & Bring Troops Home

I'm against bailouts on principle for a lot of reasons in general: companies should pay the price of their own mistakes, we have limited resources that could be better spent directly paying down the national debt, putting people to work, etc.

But in the case of the Big 3 I've got another reason: they symbolize the utter contempt the auto industry has for the environment. It's not just the H2 limo I have in the picture. GM, Ford, and especially Chrysler are all low performers on fuel economy compared to their chief rivals: Toyota and Honda. It didn't have to be this way. In the late '90s American companies were making pure electric cars thanks to CA's zero emission vehicle mandate, but that got shelved.

Let's compare the most fuel efficient model each company has. That really says it all:

Toyota - Prius - 48/45 MPG
Honda - Civic Hybrid - 40/45 MPG
Ford - Escape Hybrid - 34/30
GM - Cobalt XFE - 25/36
Chrysler - Sebring - 21/30

We're getting our butts kicked and it shows in each company's profitability. Bailing out these clowns only rewards their mediocre product lineups.

Dear Kos:

When I wrote to you the other day, I thought that I could spark your interest. Everyone had an opinion on hedge funds in last year's presidential primary. There's no reason why any desciple of Rubinomics should be spared the same fate as the others.

Oh, well.

Maybe this will get a rise out of you. I think it should be front page. Your headline could say this: "Why do we let insider traders run our economic policies?" You would get a million hits in one day. Of course the DLC sympathizers would huff and puff until their faces turned blue. So, what. A lot of folks in the fantasy-based community need to be exposed to some reality every now and then. They need to know that Robert Rubin is no hero. He has put America into decline from his positions in both government and business. Harvey Dent should quit associating himself with Rubin and Rubin's desciples; because they are bad news for anyone who claims to bring "change" to Washington D.C. The question you are going to have to deal with is: Are we a movement or a cheerleading squad? You have the power to decide which it will be. I hope you choose the former.

Sincerely,
pee-wee
Dear Paul Krugman:

Do you see how powerfully destructive your logic is? I'm not talking about economics. I'm talking about politics. You said that "progressives" weren't qualified to lead Harvey Dent's economic team, because they didn't have the right kind of experience in this time of national decline. By your logic, Bill Richardson isn't qualified to be Commerce Secretary. That's not good for business or politics, because the democratic wing of the elitist party needs token latinos in the cabinet to market it's "post-racial" image. If Harvey Dent was thinking like you, Bill Richardson (or Susan Rice) would be Secretary of State. That would have essentially killed all of the momentum built up by these last two years of photo-op politics. Either your logic is wrong or David Sirota is correct: You are trying to move the goalposts.

Sincerely,
pee-wee
I know our country needs an economic stimulus to lessen the severity of the Recession and retain and create as many jobs as possible but there are a couple of things that scare me. One is that dreaded word "ACCOUNTABILITY". Congress, including the Democrats did not get this one right. Did they really trust Paulsen to do it right and hold the banks accountable. Isn't it Congresses job to watch out for the tax payers money? I can understand the usual pork barrel stuff that seems like peanuts compared to this. Can we trust them to get the Infrastructure Stimulus Right?

The other problem I canforsee coming down the road or I should say across the border, that's right, the illegal alien problem. The problem no one dares talk about in polite company and especially during the Presidential campaign. But it is real, as real as the "ACCOUNTABILITY" problem. I have some contractor friends and I know how they take care of their bottom line. Cheap labor. These are not bsd people, all around, like the Wall Street Guys they just take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself. Some bid on Municipal contracts and are quite sucessful in geting them. Some sub-contract on jobs etc. Do these business owners know they have illegal aliens working for them, I think they do. A lot of, if not most of, the money these illegals make goes home to Mexico and many of them have homes there. Their labor does not do much for our economy except for the contractors bottom line, of course. Since the "RECESSION" stared we have actually seem more illegal aliens going back to their countries of orign than coming into the U.S. for the first time in decades. Wait until the INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM PASSES, rmember the "KATRINA" rebuild? Get the pictue, it's a horror movie staring YOUR MONEY! Well that's what is scaring the beeswax outa me.

I wonder if anyone in Congress or the Obama administration will have the guts to take that one on? My kids, grandkids and maybe great grandkids are going to be paying for this, so it had better work and work right, but frankly no one seems to be seriously addressing these issues and they are both seriou issues. I want my tak payer money going to create jobs for legal Americans, I don't care about race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or political preference just that the jobs go to LEGAL AMERICANS. I voted and worked to elect President Obama and would do it again; I truly admire him and think he will be a good President. I just want to see this STIMULUS Program work for our Country, it is so important.
I haven't written for awhile, because I couldn't. I have written several contact e-mails to the managers of this site, and have gotten no response. I received a friend request in my e-mail,and when I clicked on, it came up as this new site. I don't know what happened, but I will return with my blogs. Oplis
Our President elect will take office in an extraordinary time. A time of trouble.Big trouble! A once great nation left to ruin. There are any number of reasons of how America got in this position, we know them by heart, the common denominator is George Walker Bush. Of that, there is no doubt!

Make no mistake, the 'borrow and spend' mentality of the U.S. Government combined with the 'borrow and borrow more' mentality of the average American citizen share in the downfall of America. One fed off of the other. Greed and irresponsibility fed more greed, more irresponsibility and further borrowing.

So. Obama starts his Presidency in a HUGE hole. We all know the old axiom about what to do when in a hole. Stop digging! Right?

Obama may stop digging and he may start building. Doing both simultaneously is near impossible. How does one do both? I fully expect Obama to ask for sacrifice. IMHO it is the only option left. Instead of Clinton's 'Bridge to the Future', Obama must build a verticle bridge, in other words, a ladder. A ladder to get us out of this hole while keeping the future in mind. When you think about building a great structure it always starts with 'hole' for the foundation. This will take great balance on the part of our new President. And sacrifice from Americans. We need patience folks. Allot of it.

I wish President Obama many blessings. I believe in the American ideal and Obama may be our last, best hope. It is also clear from the writing on the wall the the Republican party is counting on the American electorate to quickly tire of debt. This debt will be unfairly assigned to the Obama administration. We see many examples of this happening from the Right even before Obama takes office. We must push back. This is no time to be complacent. This is the time to get to work and have some patience my friends. The 2012 wolves are already lining up at our doors. Lets not build our house with straw!
maybe you opinion are changed about the war on Iraq.

Word is that the Obama team is going to look at the treaty after he takes office and work with our allies. Yeah!!!
Bush has refused to even talk about it........

Thank-you Barack....
Your position and vote on cluster bombs is what put me over the fence in support of you.

Here is a petition in support of the ban. It asks Gates to place a moritorium on their use.

The federal government can end unemployment for 1,000,000 workers by paying them to do anything at a minimum wage ($6.55/hr.) at a cost of about $15 billion per year. Why don't we just do that? Anybody who is unemployed gets a job if they apply for it and they show up to work. The unemployment rate is less than 7% now. That means we could cut it in half for $105 billion per year (this assumes 200 million in the U.S. workforce, hence 3.5% of that would be 7,000,000 workers).

In minimum wage a lot? No. But it beats going hungry.

$105 billion per year for a year or two while the economy gets back on its feet sure beats a $700 billion bailout. As an added plus, lots of people will gain compassion for those who work for minimum wage.

Obama Cuts Radio Ad for Carmouche
By Chris Cillizza | December 2, 2008; 12:30 PM ET

President-elect Barack Obama has recorded a radio ad that will hit the airwaves today in support of the Democratic House candidate in a Louisiana runoff, a sign, his advisers argue, that he is using his political power to help expand the party's majority in Congress.

In the ad, a copy of which was obtained by The Fix, Obama urges a vote for Caddo Parish District Attorney Paul Carmouche who is facing off against physician John Fleming in a runoff this Saturday for the Shreveport-area seat vacated by Rep. Jim McCrery (R).

"To change America and to get Louisiana's economy back on track -- I need leaders like Paul Carmouche working with me in Washington," Obama says. "Paul Carmouche is the kind of leader we need in Washington...to make a difference for the people of Northwest Louisiana." (Full script is after the jump.)

Pelosi declares bankruptcy is not an option for auto industry.

Nonsense! Bankruptcy is their only option. Bankruptcy will allow auto industry to resolve their business plan problems.

Congress is ill equipped to resolve business disasters. Congress's only tool is to write checks.

There should be no fear of car companies not selling autos while in bankruptcy. Why ? Because that problem already exists. People have already stopped buying their cars so bankruptcy makes no difference.

It's time to take back control of our government. Boycott and end the insanity of government which has stopped listening to the will of the people.

It's time to boycott to move congress. Tell your representative you are boycotting for change. You are not supporting an economy lead by a corrupt government.

Stop spending on all purchases such as :

--travel,
--cars, furniture and appliance purchases
--trivial entertainment and jewelery
--any electronic gizmos

Put off those purchases until we get back control. Use cash instead of credit cards when purchases are needed.

If 25% of the population slows down spending for the next 6 months, change will happen.

We know the impact of a spending slowdown, it's time to put it to work in our favor.

BOYCOTT NOW. It's easy, anonymous and effective.

Congress must authorize the bankruptcy courts to modify the terms of the loans.

Whit this simple solution, many families are going to save his house and banks are going to recover his money obtaining more liquidity.

"We the people need to create a song to show the World, America in strength that say so patriotically we will never surrender our children's dreams. I am trying in a miracle to somehow have the right people in Nashville come forward as having faith that music can unite this nation in love. I need the help of a lot of Democrats to work on a lot of Royal Republicans to get this into the airwaves.

Miracle Of America’s Reflection - Lyrics

From the shorelines to those mountain top highs,
Can you see?
The miracle of America in your reflection
From those magic spells,
Can you believe?
“We the people” can make
This miracle happen
With music blessing this world
To see us so proud
To bring Star Spangle dreams
To our children.

We are the United States of America
So let us set sail together among the heavens
With that harmony of history of being American

So let us ride the winds
That unite this blessed land
God has given us these gifts
Of divine inspiration
That we share
Generation after generation in love
We bare our
Red, white, and blue mother’s wombs
Until we march with the taps
Onto Amazing Grace.

We are the United States of America
So let us set sail together among the heavens
With that melody of heritage of being American
So can you see
That American miracle reflection glow
Spreading across your heart in vibrations
That will never be defeated.
For “We are the people”
Of this nation’s pride.

(From sea to shining sea,
Can you see our flag flying.)

Facts:
-- $7 trillion has been committed to the bailout
-- 100 million households in America
-- 20% of the population controls 80% of the wealth
-- 80% of population need help = 80 million households

If $7 trillion bailout had gone to citizens then:

$7 trillion / 80 million households = $87,500 per household.

money would have allowed folks to:
-- stop foreclosures
-- buy a new car
-- put money aside for college
-- pay off credit cards
-- put remainder in savings accounts

which would have stimulated the economy.
