Gov. Bill Richardson Named Commerce Secretary-Designate

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson was named Secretary of Commerce-Designate by President-elect Barack Obama at a press conference in Chicago.

Governor Richardson was re-elected to a second term in 2006. He previously served as a member of the House of Representatives for fifteen years, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and as Secretary of Energy during the Clinton administration.

I think it was smart to put two of our strongest people in charge of relating to international affairs.

We need competent faces on the world stage to push forward our economic and diplomatic efforts. With Richardson and Clinton as our representatives, no country will doubt that this country is back on the rise and that we mean business.

Richardson in particular is someone that has a proven track record with other nations whether adversaries or allies. He will be a face the developing nations will look to for guidance.
